Student Accommodation and DDA Improvement Works, Feasibility Study for Spurgeon’s College
Robinson Kenning & Gallagher were approached by the world-renowned Surgeon’s Theological College based in South Norwood, Croydon to undertake feasibility studies for a major upgrading to on-site student accommodation and educational facilities. The proposals were part of an overall programme of works to provide disabled access to all college buildings.
The solutions for accommodating the new college facilities were developed through close consultation with the college students and board members. A proposed on-site, student halls of residence (for mature students) was designed with a contemporary facade to contrast with the classical architecture of the existing building.
Similarly, a new two-storey atrium (located between the main building and the library) was designed to create a new focal hub for the college, with common IT facilities and break-out areas. One of the more important design issues was to considerately mediate the height of the proposed stepped atrium roof between the existing main building and library building.
